One day Debate Tournaments

Applications are currently CLOSED

In honor of Women’s History Month- March 8th is International Women’s Equality Day, BALI in collaboration with NYCUDL, for the 8th year in a row, will be holding a citywide debate competition for middle school and high school students.

This year’s resolution is:

The United States should replace means tested welfare with a Universal Basic Income.

The event includes a speaker in the morning and debate after.

Our morning speaker, Almaz Zelleke (PhD Harvard University) is Associate Professor of Practice in Political Science at NYU Shanghai, where she teaches political science and comparative political economy and directs the undergraduate Social Science major. Her academic interests are in political theory and public policy, feminist political theory, and comparative political economy. Her articles on basic income, distributive justice, welfare policy, and feminist political theory have been published in Basic Income Studies, Political Quarterly, Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare, Policy and Politics, Review of Social Economy, and Journal of Socio-Economics. For more information, visit almazzelleke.com.

*We expect up to 80 students from different public schools throughout the city to participate in this event. Breakfast and lunch are included.

BALI believes debate is a very important skill for our future leaders to have to succeed as leaders which is why all our programmatic work has debate incorporated into it.

We believe everyone should have access to debate in their schools. This is unfortunately not the case for everyone, especially for those youth attending school in underserved communities. Debate is one of the most efficient academic programs that wonderfully prepares our youth for college, career and civic engagement. This is why during the summer 40% of each day consists of debate labs and during the after school programs about 30% of the programming consists of debate labs. BALI has been collaborating on the One Day Debate Tournaments over the years with the NYC Urban Debate League (NYCUDL) - a wonderful organization that specializes in debate.

One Day Debate Tournaments are one day events - we usually have two during one year. Traditionally we hold one tournament during Women’s History Month dedicated to a topic that directly relates to girls and women’s issues. Our debate competitions are based on a topic chosen by BALI and NYCUDL.
